Description

Space Vehicle Dynamics and Control, Revised First Edition provides a solid foundation in dynamic modeling, analysis, and control of space vehicles featuring detailed sections covering the fundamentals of controlling orbital, attitude, and structural motions of space vehicles.

The textbook highlights a range of orbital maneuvering and control problems: orbital transfer, rendezvous, and halo orbit determination and control. Rotational maneuvering and attitude control problems of space vehicles under the influence of reaction jet firings, internal energy dissipation, or momentum transfer via reaction wheels and control moment gyros are treated in detail. It also covers the analysis and design of attitude control systems in the presence of structural flexibility and/or propellant sloshing. This text requires a thorough knowledge of vector and matrix algebra, calculus, ordinary differential equations, engineering mechanics, and linear system dynamics and control. The first two chapters provide a summary of such necessary background material. Some problems may require the use of software for the analysis, control design, and numerical simulation, so readers should have access to computational software (i.e., MATLAB) on a personal computer. MATLAB is a registered trademark of The MathWorks, Inc.

The following chapters which formerly appeared in Space Vehicle Dynamics and Control, Second Edition are now included in Space Vehicle Guidance, Control and Astrodynamics.

  • – Control Moment Gyros for Agile Imaging Satellites

  • – Solar-Sail Dynamics and Control

  • – Solar-Sail Missions for Asteroid Deflection

  • – Attitude and Orbit Control of Space Solar Power Satellites

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Bong Wie is the Vance D. Coffman Endowed Chair Professor of Aerospace Engineering at Iowa State University. He holds a B.S. in aerospace engineering from Seoul National University and a M.S. and Ph.D. in aeronautics and astronautics from Stanford University. In 2006 he received AIAA’s Mechanics and Control of Flight Award for his innovative research on advanced control of complex spacecraft such as solar sails, large flexible structures, and agile imaging satellites equipped with control moment gyros. He has three patents on singularity-avoidance steering logic of control moment gyros. From 20112014, he was a NIAC (NASA Advanced Innovative Concepts) Fellow for developing an innovative solution to NASA’s near-Earth object (NEO) impact threat mitigation grand challenge and its flight validation mission design. He is an Associate Fellow of AIAA.
